Sport - 2011

June 2011
Cross Country
MBIS had an excellent day at the North Harbour Intermediate Cross Country Champs. We competed in all divisions and all athletes ran well on a very wet and demanding course at Te Harehau Bay on the Whangaparoa Peninsula. Cross Country Zone Day Results: Yr 7 Boys team 1st, Yr 8 Girls Team 1st, Yr 8 Boys Team 1st.

The following athletes qualified for the Auckland champs after excelling on this demanding but excellent course: Yr 7 Girls: Jacey Cropp and Claudia Bunge; Yr 7 boys: Owen Jury, Joseph Clark, Oliver Heal, Hamish Green, Harrison Clarke; Yr 8 Girls: Sophie Laurie, Nadege Salvador, Natasha Oborn, Livvy Vellekoop and Yr 8 Boys: Owen Ireland, Michael Sinclair, Luke Mercieca, Joe Jackson, Ryan Williams, Nicolo Oporto and Jason Augood.
Congratulations to the whole team on a great effort and representing Murrays Bay with distinction.

June 2011
Soccer Girls

The Yr 8 girls soccer team took part in the North Harbour Champs on Wednesday 25th May. Competition was fierce with 13 schools taking part. Murrays Bay played superbly through the pool play with 4 wins and 2 draws.

We qualified top of our pool to play Pinehurst in the semi-final. A 2-0 victory saw us play Belmont in the grand final.

Earlier we had played out a 0-0 draw against a very strong team, but managed to sneak home a goal in the 2nd half to take a 1-0 win and the title of North Harbour Champs.

All girls played fantastically, scoring some great goals and keeping a clean sheet over all 8 matches. Bring on Auckland Champs!!!

May 2011
Girls cricket
This year the girls’ team participated in both the NH Zone Day and the Milo Shield. The Zone Day was held at Sunnynook Park and the team played AJHS and Wairau Intermediate. For most of the team it was their first introduction to proper cricket with a leather ball, leg pads and gloves. We were unfortunate to not win a game, however, the skill level developed quickly.

The Milo Shield games were played against TNIS and Northcross. TNIS proved to be too tough to beat, yet the girls pulled off a victory against Northcross on the very last ball of the game. By this time, the skill level of each player had improved considerably and the team really deserved their win.

Thanks to parents who took transport and supported on the sideline.

The team was: Livvie Vellekoop Rm3 (captain) Zara Jillings Rm14, Kiri Palmer Rm6, Maddie Vellekoop Rm3, Katrina Bennett Rm13, Jolene O’Sullivan Rm16, Jhovana Hester Rm3, Isabella Jones-Hill Rm3, Shae Wong-Toi Knight Rm42, Waimarie Wynyard Rm11, Sophie Bond Rm11 and Isabella Thomas Rm16.

May 2011
Soccer

The Yr 7 boys soccer team played in the North Harbour championships on Monday 16th May at Rosedale park. The boys performed superbly and went through the day unbeaten to come out as champions. Murrays Bay managed to score 20 goals over the course of the day and didn’t get one against in an outstanding display of teamwork. The highlights of the day included the 8-0 win over Whangaparoa, a 4-0 win in the semi-final over Rosmini and Nathan Tomlinson’s fantastic strike to win the final against Takapuna 1-0. The boys did the school proud and will no doubt be confident going into the Auckland Champs in 2 weeks time. Good job lads.

May 2011
Orienteering

MBIS competed in the Secondary Schools Orienteering Champs on Tuesday May 10th in what can only be described as a very tough wintery day. Woodhill Forrest was the course, and this really tested children who were familiar with more open and geographical feature based courses which are generally easier to follow. However in an outstanding effort by all who participated we had some great results.

Sophie Bond won the Yr7/8 division and Luke Mercieca came second in his. Great effort was also noted by Hannah Ah Koy and Jake Good who unintentionally got the wrong maps but stuck at their respective courses to the bitter end in very trying conditions. These are the sporting values that others look up to and it was great to see the team spirit and respect showed to these two students from others in their team. Strong efforts were also noted from Ryan Williams and Nadege Salvador.

We all look forward now to a strong showing at the Intermediate Inter Zone Champs next.
Team members participating were as follows.
Ryan Williams, Luke Mercieca, Ryan Dawson, Leroy Mangila, Jake Good, Harri Adams, Hannah Ah Koy, Olivia Vellekoop, Helena Moore, Kiri Palmer, Sophie Bond, Nadege Salvador.

The Final Orienteering event of the season was held on Tuesday May 17th at Cornwell Park in Auckland with the InterZone Auckland Champs for Yr 7 and 8.
Murrays Bay Intermediate have participated throughout Terms 1 and 2 and have had some great performances, with outstanding results last week at the Secondary School Champs. This week we were not able to match the great run we have had, but still performed creditably, especially in the Yr 8 Boys and Girls. A great result was achieved with Ryan Williams coming in at 21 min’s 29 sec’s in the Yr 8 Boys and Nadege Salvador and Olivia Vellekoop fighting it out with times of 33 min’s 44 sec’s and 33 min’s 46 sec’s respectively. Excellent improvement has been achieved throughout the year, especially with Yr 8 boys Leroy Mangila and Jake Good who both had equal times on the day of 30 min’s 49 sec’s.
I would like to thank all the Mums and Dads for excellent support throughout the season, with transport and organisation on the day on many occasions. We look forward to some of the Yr 7’s continuing on with the fine MBIS results and participation, many of who had their first taste today of this growing sport.

May 2011
Triathlon

The North Harbour Intermediate Schools Triathlon was held at Hobsonville Airbase on Monday, 11th April. MBIS was well represented and the following results were gained. Chase Hoffman was 7th in the Yr7 boys event, with Mat Jacobi 16th. An outstanding effort from Jacey Cropp saw her take out the Yr7 girls event, with Ashleigh Williams 11th and Katrina Bolton 23rd.

Nicolo Oporto continued his outstanding season by winning the Yr8 individual event, with Ethan Thomas 3rd. Emily Sanderson was 2nd in the Yr8 girls event, with Alicia McKenzie 4th, Nadege Salvador 7th and Nicole Fletcher 15th.
Our Yr7 boys team of Ethan Martin, Hamish Green and Joe Fisher were 3rd in the Yr7 boys event with Harlen Russell, Logan Harre and Tremaine Lehndorf coming a creditable 8th.

Lauren Farnan, Erin Nugent and Francesca McGregor were 5th in the Yr7 girls teams event with Mae-eve Puamau, Sophia Williams and Bella Hemopo working well for 9th.
Our boys teams of Jordan Te Aukura, Harri Adams, Cooper Green, Finn Pethersbroke, Jake Lockwood and Josh Haddy were 5th and 6th in the Yr8 boys teams event with John Kwon, Louie Puskas and Joe Bell 15th.

Kiri Palmer, Livvy Vellekoop and Sophie Bond were 4th in the Yr8 girls teams event, with Briar Dobson, Natasha Oborn and Ella Reshef 7th, Katy Potts, Hannah Ahkoy and Rebecca Strange 8th.
The triathlon talent at MBIS is outstanding and the results are a testament to the skill and hard work being put in.

Ocean Swimming (NZ Ocean Swim Series)
Congratulations to the following students who took part in the Harbour Crossing from Bayswater to the Viaduct. It was a tough and rough swim but they battled it out for the first time and came away with fantastic times.

November 2010
Golfing success
On Thursday 11th November, two MBIS golf teams took part in the Zone Day for North Harbour Intermediate Schools. Congratulations to Team 1 who combined perfectly in their “Ambrose” competition to win by 4 strokes at 7 under par.

Team 2 also had success with their competitive gross score as well as being well placed on handicap. This was a great day for these young people who have great potential for the future.

November 2010
Kate Salter Rm 45 had a successful day at the North Harbour Schools Trampoline competition on Sunday November 7th. Kate was the only entry from MBIS and managed to win a silver medal in her category at yr 8 level. Well done Kate!

September 2010
NZAIMS Sporting Championships 2010 – MBIS came 6th!
On Sunday 5th September, 80 NZAIMS Team members plus 24 adults (parents and teachers), made their way to Tauranga for the start of the 7th NZAIMS Sporting Championships. Our school was just one of 107 Intermediate Schools from Dunedin to Northland to send the best of their athletes and teams. The entire Murrays Bay Intermediate Team proved to be wonderful ambassadors for our school. Throughout the week of competition the level of sportsmanship, effort, commitment, conduct and behaviour of our team members was outstanding. There were many special moments throughout the week - victories, losses, cheers and heart ache. These are all components of a top sports week that many of our students will remember for a long time.
The week presented some challenges, especially the bad weather, but an excellent parental and teacher support team helped make it run very smoothly. I thank all of you for your commitment to the MBIS NZAIMS Team.

The quality and level of competition was of a very high standard. Congratulations to the following teams and individuals who achieved medals.

Karate
Some of our students competed in an open tournament on Sunday 15th August and I am extremely proud to say that all the hard work paid off. Out of 56 competitors we had 15 students representing Funakoshi Karate New Zealand and managed to secure a haul of 23 medals. This is exceptional because for many of the students it was their first time competing.
Sparring is a controlled form of fighting (referee is involved) where points are scored by striking certain areas of the opponents body.
Kata – is described best as a detailed choreographed set of movements practised against an imaginary opponent.
The following students were placed: –
Jemma Pritchard Rm 9 – Silver (sparring)
Andrew Bolton Rm 20 – Silver (sparring) and Bronze (Kata)
Sensei Luke, Funakoshi Karate NZ

July 2010
NZSS Orienteering Championships
In the holidays, three MBIS Yr 7 students, Ryan Williams, Luke Mercieca and Jake Good took part in the NZSS Orienteering Championships. The event consisted of a Sprint Series held at Mt Roskill Campus, and an Individual Championship and Team Relay Event - held at Woodhill Forest.

There were over 300 students competing for national honours, representing a large number of schools from Northland to Christchurch. North Island and South Island rivalry was especially fierce, and the overall standard of competition was very high. Our Boys competed in the Yr 7/8 category and finished very strongly in the individual sprint series, although unable to make the top 10.

The highlights came on Days 2 and 3 at Woodhill. Despite the unpleasant weather conditions on Friday, Ryan persevered and came away with great success - placing 2nd in his Division (narrowly beaten by 1st place who was only 30secs ahead of him) and therefore taking his place for MBIS on the Prizewinners podium.

Day 3 was the (Mudbath!) Relay Event. Ryan set an absolutely cracking pace as the first runner home which had MBIS in 1st place at that point. Jake then took off and ran a very solid leg just being pipped by our Yr 8 Christchurch rivals from the day before. Luke our 3rd and final team runner then gave his all. Despite starting really well, he unfortunately lost his way to one of the controls which our opposition capitalised on. Full credit to Luke - he kept his head and got himself back on track to finish respectably. It was enough though to earn MBIS overall 2nd placing for the Yr 7/8 relay champs.

The boys are now setting their sights on next year's NZ Champs in which they hope to go one better, but they can all be very proud of their efforts this year - they definitely put Murrays Bay on the map so to speak, and their bright yellow shirts with corresponding big ear-to-ear smiles did not go unnoticed either.

July 2010
Some of our students had very busy holidays at Representative Sports Competitions.
Basketball
Yr 7 students Sophie Bond, Zara Jillings and Katy Potts travelled to Melbourne with the NZ Breakers Elite U13 Girls and won their trans-Tasman Tournament. Caitlin Dowden, Yr 8 played for the NZ Breakers U15 team that also won the U15 Tournament. On their return the girls played for the Harbour U13 Basketball team to win the Premiership Tournament to qualify for Nationals.
Netball
Celine McGahan, Sophie Bond, Zara Jillings and Hannah Ah Koy have been selected for the Yr 7 Harbour Netball reps.
Badminton
Angela Chan, Amanda Yap, Virginia Guntur and Tina Hsieh represented Harbour at the North Island U15 Badminton Champs held in Palmerston North. Their team took first place in the division 2 age group.
Water Polo
Following convincing wins by our Yr 7 and Yr 8 Water Polo teams to take Term 2 Harbour Championship honours and our Yr 7 teams 2 and 3 having great wins in their finals a number of our Water Polo players were selected to represent Harbour at the Pan Pacific Youth Water Polo Tournament. Georgia Cunninghame, Stacey Landry and Sophie McLean played in the NHWP Girls U14B Team that came a very credible 10th (the best B team in the Country). Hugo Munro and Josh Miller played in the NHWP Boys U14B Team that came 12th.
Soccer
Logan Hohaia played for Waikato as goalie for his team to finish 11th. Gemma Booth played in the Tournament winning Harbour U14 A team for girls and Logan Geary played in the Harbour U14 A team that also won the boys competition.

Table Tennis Zone Day
The following students represented our school at the Table Tennis Zone day; Sam Griffiths, Sam Brown, Connor Moulin, Taylor Clarkson, Samantha Chong, Summar Al-Rufaie, Jessica Romhany and Danya Yang. Both Boys and Girls teams played table tennis continuously throughout the day and all gained valuable experience. Our Girls pairing of Jessica and Danya took out the title of overall Girls Team Zone Champions by winning the doubles and taking second place in the singles.

Auckland Champs Soccer
After winning the North Harbour Championships, the Year 7 & 8 girls team and the year 8 boys team competed in the Auckland champs at Riversdale Reserve.

Year 7 Girls
The Year 7 girls started with an emphatic 6-0 win over Waiuku and managed to go through unbeaten to the final against ANIS. The girls played exceptionally well but ended up going down 1-0 to a very good side. 2nd place was a great result for the girls and they were very pleased with their determination and efforts.

Year 8 Girls
The Year 8 girls were clearly the dominant team all day and played some fantastic soccer to win all of their games leading up to the final. Although they again proved to be the best team, it had to be decided in extra time when Sarah Wardenburg slotted home the tournament winning shot. The girls were ecstatic with their win and really showed why they are the best school in Auckland. AWESOME effort girls!!!!

Year 8 Boys
The Year 8 boys had high hopes after their domination of the North Harbour champs. They were a bit slow to start with, coming back for a 2-1 win over Sacred Heart and then drawing with Papatoetoe after a number of chances. They stepped it up a notch and beat a good Blockhouse Bay team 4-0, then breezed through the semi-final 3-0. They came up short in the final against a very good Remuera Intermediate side who thoroughly deserved the right to be named top team.

Well done to all players who took part in what was an extremely successful couple of days.

Under 45kg Rugby
The under 45kg rugby team took part in the Zone Rugby Field day last week. We took a strong side of 21 boys and enjoyed good success in our pool matches to make it to the final. Our first game against Takapuna saw Jarvis, Luka and Josh score for a 15-0 win. Our second game was defaulted by Albany Junior and it meant the team had to wait until 12.30 to play Birkdale. This was a hard fought game but our boys scored 2 tries to nil to make the way to the final against Northcross. Our boys played their hearts out but the bounce of the ball just didn’t go our way however we were happy to take second place.
Team; Luka U. Charlie S. Callum G. Jack H. Trent G. Trent B. Riaan B. Shuba K. Brennan J. Casey S. Joe L. Jarvis J. Sam R. Taylor C. Chris G. Amhiel B. Cooper G. Tom P-H. Jordan T-A. James G. Blake T. Josh Handa. Josh Haddy.

May 2010
Boys Rugby
The U55kg Rugby Team have had a very good start to the season. We have played five games and won four of them. We have played in two tournaments, one in Silverdale last Tuesday and one game at Rangitoto College last Thursday.
At the Silverdale tournament, we lost to a strong Northcross team in the first game. We managed to recover by notching up good wins against Whangaparoa, Mahurangi and Rosmini.
At Rangitoto College last Thursday, we had one game against Northcross. We turned out a very strong display and managed to beat them 20-0.
We have got three tournaments left this season. The team is looking in really good shape and will hopefully compete to a high level in the next tournaments. Thank you to all of the parents who supported us last week.

Soccer
On Thursday 20th May the Yr 8 Soccer Team competed in the North Harbour Championships held at Rosedale Park. All of the boys represented MBIS with pride and played out of their skin. We were a bit slow to get going in the first game against Wairau but managed to come away with a 2-0 victory. Momentum gathered from there and we won our next for pool games 8-0, 4-0, 1-0 and 3-0. Spirits were high leading into the semi-final against AJHS and we came away with a 1-0 victory.

We saved our best performance of the day against Rosmini in the final (who knocked us out last year) and managed to win 4-0 with a number of other chances coming off the crossbar.

It was a great day all round with the boys thoroughly deserving their win. We look forward to more of the same at the Auckland Champs.

Girls Year 7 Soccer
On 12th May, the Girls Yr 7 Soccer Team went to the North Harbour Soccer Tournament to brave the wind and rain and face 10 other schools for the field day competition. We had a slow start drawing our first game against TNIS 1-1, but came back in our second game to win 4-0 against Orewa. We also played Northcross and Whangaparoa and won our pool. We played Albany Junior High in the semi-finals and won 4-0 and had a challenging final against Belmont winning 2-1 with a very tense last 3 minutes defending our end to the final whistle.

The girls showed great sportsmanship as well as enthusiasm throughout the day. They really exemplified this term’s values of perseverance, self-discipline and resilience. Way to go girls, and good luck at the Auckland Champs on 1st June.

A special mention for Te Ohorere Williams who had the 3rd fastest MBI time in all of our teams.

Exceptional times were achieved by Luke Mercieca and Riaan Burger, Ryan Williams and Matt McCathie. I would like to thank all those involved in a great effort representing MBIS in these competitions. Our determination to complete each course showed with great individual efforts of ‘never give up’ by all students. Well done to all that participated.

MBIS students took out top places at the Optimist National Championships sailed off Whitianga over Easter. The Open Fleet (under 16) was contested by 196 sailors including 32 internationals. In the Green Fleet, for sailors in their first two years of racing, Kerensa Jennings Rm 16 won two of the nine races and finished 1st 11 year old and 4th overall out of 88 sailors. Kerensa showed that she is a sailor whom Ellie, Cameron and James will have to look out for when she joins them in Open Fleet next season!

Congratulations Water Polo Players.
Congratulations both Yr 7 and Yr 8 Water Polo teams for outstanding results last term. Our Yr 7 boys played our Yr 7 girls in the final with the boys winning by one goal. In the Yr 8 unofficial competition our team convincingly won every game to take top seeding.

It is great to see our sports players continuing on from the Intermediate School level. Just this week 3 girls from our 2008 NZ Champs winning team were named in the New Zealand Girls U15 team, Abi Cunninghame, Ema Carevic, and Jordyn Knights.
From our 2006 NZ Champs winning team Olivia Murphy, Nina Lala, Kendall Moses, Sarah Landry, Chelsea Geary, Caitlin Lopes da Silva, Samantha Metcalfe, and Lisa Tuke (plus Abi Cunninghame) have this year played for the Rangitoto Senior Girls team that has won the Auckland Secondary Schools title, the North Island Champs and during the holidays continued its undefeated run by winning the New Zealand Champs.

Basketball Success
During the Easter Holidays three of our pupils Sophie Bond Rm 44, Zara Jillings Rm 16 and Katy Potts Rm 22 all attended the Basketball Pacific Easter Tournament in Rotorua as members of the Under 13A North Harbour Basketball Team. They played against teams from all over the top of the North Island, beating all easily and defeating West Auckland in the final, more than doubling their score. They now enter the Intercity tournament and will play at National Championships in Christchurch in October.

Hockey Girls 2nd X1
Our first game got underway with great excitement. It was pouring with rain. Emma Ross Rm 29, Ella Reshef Rm 19 and Helena Moore Rm 42 guickly showed off their skills, putting the TNIS backline under constant pressure. Our inners and half’s – Nikki White Rm 24, Kate Jenkins Rm 30, Malia Kerrigan Rm 11, Aimee Allan Rm 22, Morgan Smith Rm 43 and Kennedy Meiklejohn-Lea Rm 39 were quick to hunt the ball down and feed it forward and Caitlin Coppin Rm 29 played her heart out in centre going up and then back to help the defenders Isabella Jones-Hill Rm 25 and Olivia Watt Rm 25, who thwarted all attempts to get the ball into the goal circle. An awesome kick by Yasmin Baskerville Rm 7 shut down the only serious threat of goal and it was a very well fought first game with great players and great supporters. Final score nil all. Player of the day went to Malia for a great effort and some really cheeky steals. Can’t wait for next week.

Milo Shield Cricket – Girls
Game 1: Wednesday 17th February, MBIS vs Northcross at Northcross
Northcross batted first and made 113/6. MBIS bowlers bowled really well, in particular, Ana Clark, Holly Tutill, Rachael Gunn and Megan Houching. There was some great fielding, which was often difficult because of the uneven outfield.

When MBIS came to bat, there were a few early wickets, but Caitlin Dowden anchored the team with a solid score of 37. She was well backed up by new players Kate Jenkins and Kiri Palmer.

Unfortunately MBIS fell 29 run short of taking a first up win, and ended their 20 overs on 85.
The team played exceptionally well considering a lot of the girls had never played on a full sized pitch with a hard ball before.
Thanks to Mrs Jenkins and Mrs Dowding who came down to support the team.

Game 2: Wednesday 3rd March, MBIS vs TNIS at TNIS
TNIS batted first and made 125/6. MBIS had a few new players in the team due to sickness and EOTC but the new players certainly made their mark on the team. Top bowling from Ana Clark, Megan Houching, Rachael Gunn, Maddie Jorgensen and Sarah Wardenburg made sure the wickets kept falling. Maddie Jorgensen took two fantastic catches in the field also. Caitlin Dowden showed great skill as wicket keeper, taking 3 catches in the process.

MBIS then batted and a great innings from the captain Ana Clark steered the team in the right direction with a quick 24 (all 4’s!). Most of the players made starts but were unfortunate not to carry on.
The end result left MBIS with 65, all out on the last ball.
Thanks to Mr and Mrs Kinniburgh who helped transport and support the girls during the game. Thanks also to the parents and grandparents who were able to make it to the game also.

Boys Softball
It was a tough day for the boys softball teams from MBI who performed at an incredible level. Both teams made the semi-finals with sharp fielding skills and aggressive batting.
In the semi’s the Yr 8 boys lost to Birkdale who went on to win it, however they beat Glenfield to take out 3rd place. The Yr 7 boys got a respectable 4th place. Out of 10 different intermediates both results pleased their coaches, Mr Kruyen and Mr Anderson, immensely. Well done boys.

MBI Surfing Competition
On Wednesday 24th February MBI held their annual surfing competition at Omaha beach. Conditions tested the athletes with 3 to 5 foot faces and onshore winds. There were some fantastic rides from all 18 competitors. Mr Kruyen and Mr Anderson were the judges who were looking for radical moves on the biggest, longest wave.

There were 9 twenty minute 4 man heats with the top two rides being counted. With a beach start, plenty of duck diving and freak wave sets the MBI students were pushed mentally and physically. Zara Jillings came 2nd in the female divison with Ruby Hallett coming first and also coming 4th in the open division.

The final was very close with results below:
1. Jarvis Jensen 2. Ethan Thomas 3. Joshua Harden 4. Ruby Hallett
Well done Jarvis, all finalists won awesome prizes from Rip Curl.
