Exams and Academic Competitions
Murrays Bay Intermediate School does not have any formal exams. However, we do offer external exams if students wish to participate.

The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) are independent skills-based assessments with a competition element. ICAS are developed annually for primary and secondary school students in the subject areas of Computer Skills, English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Writing

Year 7- paper D

Cost per exam: $8.50 except Writing which is $19.50 and Spelling $10.50.
(NOTE: If a student is away they are unable to resit and there is no refunds - due to strict exam rules)
Throughout the year various English competitions are offered to Murrays Bay Intermediate Students.
March-May: Barfoot and Thompson Writing Challenge
The whole school participates in the Science Fair in Term 3.
Winning science fair projects compete in the Auckland Science Fair.
Team sustainability challenge
Terms 1, 3 & 4
Cost: $10 per student
Interschool Chess competition
Open from Beginners to Experienced players. Zone competition in August.

Otago University Problem Solving
Entries are in late February/ early March.
Throughout the year, Year 7 and 8 students sit 5 tests with 5 maths problem solving questions. Each set of questions starts at a relatively easy level with questions 4 or 5 being more difficult.
The results are marked at the school and recorded on the university’s web site. At the end of the year, the university issues certificates showing student achievement.
Students who are particularly successful may be selected to participate in the “Final Challenge”. Top participants recieve Otago University Problem Solving Challenge prizes.
Entrance cost: $2 for the year.
The competition suits medium to high level mathematicians.
To enter: February and early March - this competition form may be printed and given to the classroom teacher.
In Term 2, teams are selected from each class to compete in the school competition. The competition is loud and electric! The top Year 7 and Year 8 teams then compete in the North Shore competition in August.
Hottest Home Baker
Year 8 students, 24 from each Minischool will be selected by their teachers to
compete. Cooking competition based on the TV3 show.
Each Mini School competition occurs once or twice a term.
