AIM At MBI we offer two Extension Classes in Year 7 and Year 8. These classes aim to provide students with the opportunity to explore key issues and themes in greater breadth and depth.
There is an enhanced focus on intellectual challenges that stimulate student agency, creativity, problem solving, analytical expression and higher order thinking.
CHARACTERISTICS OF CANDIDATES The following characteristics can be reflective of students who are potential candidates for Extension Classes: ● Masters information quickly, easily grasps underlying principles ● Displays logical and analytical thinking ● Likes intellectual challenges ● Produces original ideas ● Is prepared to experiment with novel ideas and risk being wrong ● Strives for high standards and personal achievement ● Is highly self-motivated and sets personal goals ● Is persistent in seeing tasks to completion ● Asks searching questions ● Embraces leadership opportunities
SELECTION PROCESS With limited spaces available, we aim to select students who are a ‘best fit’ for the opportunity. The following process supports our ability in making this judgement. 1. Parent(s) and/or students indicate interest during the Enrolment process 2. Recommendation/support from Primary School 3. Previous academic success 4. Involvement in passion areas (Music, Arts, Sport, Humanitarian, Social, etc.) 5. Achievement on entrance tests (Math, Reading, Writing, Critical thinking) 6. Creative and Social Leadership characteristics during Problem Solving task
Students who would like to apply for a place in one of our Extension Classes will be asked to attend a ‘Selection Day’ in Term 4.
All final decisions of placement in the Extension Class are confirmed by the Extension Class Co-ordinator and school Principal. MBI reserves the right to review any class placement and make a decision regarding the continuation or exemption of the placement in the Extension Class
❏ The cost to participate in an Extension Class Selection Day is $15 per student ❏ During the Extension Class Selection Day students will participate in entrance tests and problem solving tasks. ❏ Applicants have the choice of two Extension Class Selection Day dates: ❏ Monday 21st October, 9.15am - 2.30pm OR Tuesday 29th October, 9.15am - 2.30pm ❏ Students attend EITHER day, not both ❏ To register your child’s name and details for one of the Extension Class Selection Days, please follow this process:
