| Orientation
and Welcome
To help your child settle in to school, on the
first day he/she will be given a kiwi buddy and a buddy from your
home country. Your child can look forward to meeting a personal
kiwi buddy on the first day in class. They will help you to make
lots of friends here at Murrays Bay Intermediate. A first language
buddy will also be there to help your student settle into class.
These students will help your child form warm, caring friendships
and this will help the International student to speak English.
New students receive a welcome pack with a lovely book on New Zealand
and other gifts. An orientation programme in their first language
helps your child to begin understanding about living in New Zealand
and how the school operates. If the child lives in a kiwi homestay
we also give information about New Zealand homes and family culture.
The International students are encouraged to join in with the many
sports, performing arts and technology activities. The students
and staff at Murrays Bay Intermediate School enjoy having a variety
of cultures in our school. Each year we celebrate our various cultures
with a special cultural show and the students from other lands share
their native language, song and dance.
English
Second Language Class
Your child will attend an English Language Learners Class 3 - 5
times a week. In small groups students practice their spoken and
written English with a trained teacher. The Dean of International
Students will check to ensure that your child is safe and happy
in the school and homestay accommodation. The Dean will also visit
the homestay regularly.
After School English Classes available , please

Accommodation
As per the Code of Practice and Guidelines, the School upon or before
enrolment will determine and verify which category of accommodation
the student will live in regardless of age i.e.
- Homestay - Arranged by the student’s agent with the approval
of the school
- Designated Caregiver
- Parent.
Homestay
All Homestays are carefully selected and monitored to ensure that
appropriate standards are maintained.
If arranged by the school the homestay payment to a New Zealand
homestay host is NZD$230 per week. This is payable in advance to
the Homestay Caregiver by the student’s agent or parent. One
week’s notice must be given by either party (homestay or student)
prior to a student being placed in another homestay. A once off
introduction/administration fee of $100 is charged by the school
for a homestay arranged by the school.
Designated Caregiver
The student may live with a relative or close family friend nominated
by the parent. The School will visit the home of the designated
caregiver on enrolment.
Parent
Students living with parents must still be monitored by the School.
At no time can a parent leave the student unsupervised overnight
or for any length of time without first informing the School and
seeking approval for a temporary adult caregiver to take their place.
If students are living with a parent, then the parent has full responsibility
for the pastoral care of the student outside tuition hours, and
may be called up to the school at short notice on school matters.
If a parent leaves a student unsupervised in New Zealand that student
will lose their place at the School and New Zealand Immigration
will be informed. Parents must follow all the policies of the School
at all times. Birth Certificates and copies of passports and visas
are required to verify parent status.
