International Student General Information
Welcome and First Day at School
"To help your child settle in to school, your child can look forward to meeting a personal New Zealand friend on the first day in class. They will help you to make lots of friends here at Murrays Bay Intermediate. A friend from your home country will also be there to help your child settle into class. These students will help your child form warm, caring friendships and this will help your child to speak English." Janene Levett (Dean of International Students)
New students receive a welcome pack which includes a fantastic book about New Zealand. An orientation programme in their first language helps new students to understand about living in New Zealand and how Murrays Bay Intermediate School operates. If the new student lives in a homestay, we also give information about New Zealand homes and family culture.
International students are encouraged to join in with the many sports, performing arts and technology activities (not all are included in the fees).
Code of Practice for Pastoral Care
Murrays Bay Intermediate School has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Minister of Education.
International Students are integrated into classrooms with New Zealand students from the first day at Murrays Bay Intermediate School. International Students requiring extra support with their English are invited to join ELIP (the English Language Intensive Programme). As students make progress with their English, they move through the ELIP groups until they reach Stage 3 of the English Language Learning Progressions and graduate from the programme. Students attend ELIP classes 1-5 blocks per week and learn from trained English teachers. The units covered in ELIP aim to introduce students to the New Zealand culture and support the English curriculum in the mainstream classrooms. International Students are invited to attend a number of outings during the year including a trip to Sheep World and Butterfly Creek. They are encouraged to join in ELIP events including the Moon Festival and the Cultural Assembly. Our ELIP teachers are kind and caring and support our International Students during their time at our school.
The School welcomes direct communication from parents via phone, email, letter or visits. If you are wishing to speak to someone at the school please email Janene Levett and she will arrange a school representative to return your call.
International Students receive a Leaving Certificate and School Report when they leave the school.
Full details of immigration requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available from the Immigration New Zealand website.
