Home Learning

There are foundational skills that will continually develop our learners and should be supported at home through regular routines. For example, we know that independent reading as a regular and sustained practice will have one of the most significant impacts on overall academic success. Therefore, we strongly recommend our students read for pleasure at home for at least 15 minutes a day. This simple routine puts our learners on the pathway to high literacy achievement.

Our Midbays Kahui Ako has put together a parent support package, called ‘Reading at home.’

We also know using mathematical thinking in real life situations reinforces foundational number skills and strategies that support maths. As such, we encourage families to actively look for authentic opportunities to engage their child(ren) in ‘real life’ mathematical problem solving moments at home.

Although we do not advocate for speed tests, or a ‘skill and drill’ approach to learning, we recognise that for some of our learners, increased time and commitment to specific foundation skills may further support their learning at school. In these situations, classroom teachers will have the best insight to help support individual student needs.

As a learning community, we recognise many of our students are highly engaged in after-school commitments; these commitments range from sport, music, to a variety of additional tuition. Furthermore, with our school-wide focus on well-being, we also recognise the importance of our students having down time and an opportunity to pursue personal interests. As a result of our professional discussions and support from the research, as a team at MBI we have decided that teachers will not be assigning or assessing any formal homework. We recognise some families may value homework routines, and in support of this value we have our ‘Home learning” website available.

This website offers a variety of homework tasks students can easily access and are related to the curricular content being covered at school.
